Monoprint (unique print): monotype and linoleum carving. 22”x30”
This particular series of prints, “Facing East”, came out of me developing an unexpected growing relationship with China until I finally was awarded an appointment as Visiting Professor by the Changsha Normal University in 2015. Over the years, I was invited by different universities and each time I spent time there, I met new people who in turn decided to invite me to teach and exhibit.
“Facing East” is a series of monoprints that takes as its inspiration the exquisite aesthetics of the “Old China”, some of which is still alive and well today. Traveling within the context of a teaching appointment opened unique opportunities to visit century-old businesses where artists still make prints and carve stones the way their ancestors did. One piece at a time. By hand. Not quite the way we have come to think of “Made in China” nowadays!
