“Unfurl and Reach: Lifecycles” is a large woodcut made of twenty-four 8”x8” pieces. My profound love affair with woodblock carving started while I was teaching printmaking at the Changsha Normal University, where I was appointed visiting professor in 2015. My poor mastery of the Mandarin language left me in dire need of additional communication tools to create a dynamic and stimulating learning environment. Carving a series of life-size self-portraits in the classroom was my response to what could otherwise have amounted to a frustrating language barrier. In addition to achieving my objective, I also developed a true appreciation for the medium: I discovered that it bears a strong resemblance to my meditation practice. It is a deliberate process. Slow. Gentle. Peaceful. Yet, once all twenty-four plates were finished, a singular, almost feverish playfulness shattered the quiet of the studio: twenty rollers loaded with every color of the rainbow hit the plates in apparent chaos. Printing happened with a press, with my feet, with my hands; sometimes using more than one plate at a time; occasionally using both sides of the paper. It was like following a golden thread: with every idea I carried out to completion, another one took birth immediately.
