MOROCCO: When life provides before you even ask

Version française sous les photos

It’s dusk. Mike and I are navigating Chefchaouen’s pushy vendors to get home and are feeling a bit tense. “Do you mind if I walk with you for a moment? That guy over there freaks me out.” We create a space between us to invite the woman to safety. I don’t know it yet but I just met Anna and our friendship will have a huge impact on my life.

Anna left her Idaho to WALK around the world to raise awareness about water issues. Touched by stories of people worldwide walking many hours just to get to water and inspired by the United Nations’ Envision2030: the 17 sustainable development goals to transform our world, Anna is walking. On her own. No organization. No nothing.

In the semi dark, I smile to myself -- now THAT’s amazing: World Peace meets Water! I suddenly feel much less lonely.

By the time we finally leave each other, we’ve had hours of conversations and laughter over a lovely dinner. Mike is mesmerized: Anna, tell me, do you ever feel blue or experience self doubt? All the time: I cry in my tent at night! You two really must talk, Mike looks almost excited, at the very least relieved. Anna seems confused so I share that I just had had a terrible few weeks. I wanted to throw it all away. I am torturing myself, going around in endless circles. Am I really making a difference? Does what I do matter? Does anybody even get it? There is one thing I never doubt however, even when I’m at my worst: my sincerity. Deep down I know that I am working with all my heart to forge deep bonds with the people I meet to make the world just a little smaller and better. Less full of fear. I know the difference between “just traveling” – relaxing, looking at beautiful landscapes, enjoying locals’ friendliness -- and “traveling with intention.” What crumbles is my ability to believe in myself. In my vision.

Today I have finally found the one person on earth who truly understands because she and I face THE SAME challenges. There is no map, no book, no Google or youtube about this. Just us and our passion. Our doubts. Our successes.

Suddenly we are both on a high that we haven’t experienced in a very long time. We are pumped. Invicible. Ready to change that damn world so full of terrible things. I do not understand it consciously yet, but I feel that I will never fall down so low again. From now on we both have a true companion.

Soudain je me sens beaucoup moins seule.
